I recently got to witness song leader Melanie DeMore in action. Melanie gets everyone up on their feet singing in about 5 seconds while clapping and swaying. As a singer-songwriter, I love when people sing with me, but song leading is special because the expectation is that everyone in the whole place (theater, church, outdoor festival!) will sing in full voice until such point that everyone feels like stopping (kind of like a spontaneous choir :)).
When I heard that Melanie DeMore would be giving a song leading masterclass, I thought “maybe I’ll try that.” Since I’d recently made up a short refrain for a vigil/protest, I raised my hand when she asked if anyone wanted to try it. In front of about 300 people (scared that I wouldn’t do it right), I walked up to the front. I worried that the refrain I made wasn’t “really” a song. I said to her, “this song isn’t done, I only have 2 lines.” She said, “go ahead.” (To read the rest, scroll down below the news).

At the end of my turn, Melanie said, “What do you mean the song isn’t done?” I said, “I don’t know. I thought I should write a verse.” She said, “why don’t you just insert a different word where ‘love’ is each time? Then she demonstrated by singing. As soon as she started singing, I realized “of course!” The solution was simple and elegant.
